Born in Iowa in 1872, Francis Harvey Cutting moved to San Jose, California in 1893 where he studied with Arthur Hill Gilbert and Charles Harmon. During the 1920's, he maintained a studio in Pacific Grove where he became known for his landscapes of Monterey, Carmel and the neighboring Pacific coastline. In 1927, Cutting built a studio in nearby Campbell where he continued to work until his death in 1964.
A prolific impressionist painter, he used a bright palette to compose vivid plein-air landscapes and coastal views of Northern California. Over a long career, Cutting exhibited widely and with success. He was the subject of numerous one-man shows including exhibitions at the California State Fair (1923, 1930-32), Stanford University Art Gallery (1925, 1928, 1933, 1939) and the Oakland Art Gallery, later the Oakland Museum, (1934, 1938). Francis "Frank" Harvey Cutting was born on a farm near Riceville, Iowa on October 8, 1872, Francis Cutting moved to California in 1893 and settled in Campbell.After graduation from San Jose State College, he taught school for a short while near Paso Robles but soon opted for an art career. An inheritance from an uncle left him free of financial worry and allowed him to devote all of his time to painting. During the 1920s he had a studio nearby in Pacific Grove where he studied with William Adam, Arthur Hill Gilbert, Charles Harmon, and Frank Pebbles. In 1927 Cutting built a home with a studio at 125 Harrison Avenue in Campbell and remained there until his death on June 8, 1964.
